Eduard Guasch MD, Ph.D., Ass. Professor

Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, Spain.

Dr. Eduard Guasch is a cardiac electrophysiologist and the Cardiovascular Institute research coordinator at Hospital Clinic in Barcelona, the “Arrhythmias and Physical activity” translational research group leader at IDIBAPS, and an Associate Professor and a member of an Innovative teaching methodology group at University of Barcelona.

His main research interests include the study of the deleterious cardiovascular consequences of strenuous, long-term physical activity, and the assessment of the mechanisms and therapeutic approach for atrial fibrillation. He has led some seminal work in animal models linking physical activity with the development of cardiovascular disease, particularly atrial fibrosis and atrial fibrillation, right ventricular arrhythmias in healthy and genetically predisposed individuals and, more recently, arterial stiffening and vascular risk.

Part of this work supports the current acceptance of the deleterious effects of excessive endurance training on atrial fibrillation incidence, as recognized in clinical guidelines and in the scientific community. In clinical research, Dr. Guasch has recently worked on the development and standardization of methods to quantify atrial remodeling and fibrosis, and its potential application in clinical practice in patients with atrial fibrillation.

He has published more than 120 papers, and his current (July 2022) h-index is 25. Dr. Guasch serves as an editorial board member of the Canadian Journal of Cardiology and as a regular reviewer of several high impact journals.
