Lorenzo Falsetti M.D., Ph.D., FEFIM, Consultant

Hospital-University “Ospedali Riuniti” di Ancona, Italy.

Dr. Lorenzo Falsetti is a consultant in the Internal, Subintensive, and Emergency Medicine department in the Hospital-University “Ospedali Riuniti” di Ancona. He is head of the regional section of the school of echography of the Italian Society of Internal Medicine (SIMI), and he is a fellow of the European Society of Internal Medicine.

Thanks to Prof. Mauro Silvestrini's guidance and the collaboration with his lab, he focused his research on ultrasonographic aspects of neurodegenerative diseases: with this group, he explored the link between specific transcranial doppler signals obtained by breath-holding index and Alzheimer's disease onset and progression. Moreover, he assessed how ultrasonographically-assessed carotid stenosis could impact chronic neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's or mild cognitive impairment. He also extended this interest by exploring the role of cardiovascular determinants in cognitive deterioration.

More recently, he expanded his research interests in the assessment of the role of specific clinical, echocardiographic and ultrasonographic markers in the critically ill patient, with a particular interest in acute ischemic stroke, pulmonary embolism, acute heart failure, and COVID-19. In the setting of the critically ill patient, he also focused on machine learning and deep learning approaches to improve the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (in the context of the TOPDRIM Project) and the assessment of ischemic and haemorragic risk in atrial fibrillation (in the context of the AFICILL Project).
