Dr. Haiyun Xu graduated from Peking Union Medical College with a PhD degree in 1996. He has worked in the US and Canadian universities for 15 years as a post-doctoral research fellow, postdoctoral research associate, and tenure track assistant professor, respectively. In September 2011, he started his job in Shantou University Medical College as a distinguished Professor. In April 22, he was appointed as the founding executive director of the China-Canada Biological Psychiatry Laboratory in Shantou University Medical College.

In October 2019, he moved to Wenzhou Medical University and started his duty of Department Chair in School of Mental health, in addition to serving as a chief clinical researcher at Kangning Hospital affiliated to Wenzhou Medical University. In December 2021, he was appointed as the executive director of the Zhejiang Provincial Clinical Research Center (Wenzhou) for Mental Disorders. Over the past decades, he participated in & presided over research projects funded by NIH, MRC/CIHR, and National Natural Science Foundation of China.

He has published 100 plus SCI papers which have been cited more than 3500 times. He has been serving as a deputy editor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology (Canada) and a gust editor for a couple of academic journals, working for 16 international academic journals as an editorial board member, and reviewing manuscripts for more than 60 international academic journals.
